TRASH MOON COLLECTIVE - COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER 7/10/24

7/10/2024

Welcome to our second Trash Moon Collective Community Newsletter! Hope everyone is getting some swimming, porch picking, and live music in. Melissa here -- I appreciate y'all sharing in our love of music and this community. We grow community like we grow a garden: slowly, with much care and attention. And hey, sometimes it grows while we're gone and even when we forget to water because it rains.

Anywho, we have a few little updates and a community member spotlight to share below.

Check it out!

Join us at Alta for a Square Dance this Friday!

Square dancing is the heart of old time music and it's also wholesome fun! I'm not much to promote my own birthday as a cause for folks to come out, but it just so happens to fall on my 31st! So if you feel like dancing with us in the mountains of little cottonwood, maybe partaking in some cake and jams, come hang this Friday 7/12!

You gotta buy tickets before tomorrow afternoon, so pick them up at the link below! Alta Community Enrichment is a really wonderful nonprofit that helps to engage the small but mighty community up there. Support them by coming to dance, smelling some wildflowers, and hearing old time tunes.

COSMIC HOOTENANNY II

TICKETS ON SALE!

We are producing another over-the-top, ridiculously fun, and high-energy evening to support Hot House West (including its program the Trash Moon Collective, of course) in expanding its community offerings and educational materials. This is a gala for the people; we’re putting the ‘fun’ back in fundraising. Do you love banjos, think Billy Strings is really cool, and have become a regular at one of our jams or workshops? Well, think about supporting us in transforming Salt Lake City into the best music scene in the whole frickin’ world by coming to our party.

Staple bands of the SLC scene will be performing along with bonus friends in a variety of arrangements. Bonus friends include ... **drum roll** ... a banjo orchestra!

...CALLING ALL BANJO PLAYERS!

Inspired by playing in a banjo orchestra at Bela Fleck's Banjo Camp, I am looking for players to perform 2 songs on stage at the Commonwealth Room. I have a fair amount of players already, but happy to add more! Each song will have multiple parts and will be accessible for higher level beginners and intermediate players who can read tab. Tabs will be sent soon for all interested players.

Local professional players and their students are welcome to join. Please fill out the short form below with your information if you'd like to take part

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT -- DON BOYAJIAN

Like many folks in the scene, I first met Don while I was working at Acoustic Music. He had recently moved to town from Upstate NY and was ogling all the guitars. I was really impressed with all his guitar noodles, from swing, to tele licks, and bluegrass shredding. He's become quite the staple at our Woodbine Jams and I'm patiently waiting for him to start a band so that I can more fully enjoy his guitar playing as a swirling cacophony around the room. He grew up playing pedal steel and guitar and has become enamored with bluegrass, graduating to a big ol' dreadnaught and donning (hehe) heavy picks and all. He hurt his foot last year shredding powder, and being the optimist he is, used his injury as an opportunity to go to shred town in the house. He keeps posting these rad videos of all the tunes he's learning and I just can't wait to see all the cool music he continues to do!

If you don't see him at the jam, he's probably trying to save our melting world as the Director of Government Affairs for a Renewable Energy Company, wading in a trout stream, enjoying his really fun-to-say name, or skiing. Give it up for Don!

TRASH MOON TUNES!

We have a Spotify Playlist and Spreadsheet with most common Bluegrass tunes played in town. If you're looking to shred with our community, start with the tunes below!

We also have a Spotify playlist with the tunes from our Fiddle Tunes V1 Book, along with a Strum Machine Playlist built by Dylan Schorer. Strum Machine is a great app onto use on your phone for backing tracks. It's really affordable and honestly I use it all the time when learning new tunes. It's not as great as a buddy, but it's much more fun than a metronome!

(Note, the TUNE OF THE WEEK will be posted in the Hot House West & Trash Moon Collective Weekly Event Newsletter, not this Trash Moon Collective Community Newsletter. The Trash Moon Collective Community Newsletter will only go out about every other week, whereas the Event Newsletter will be sent weekly and include all events related to Hot House West)

Thank you for hanging out with us in our new Trash Moon Collective Community Newsletter! Trash Moon Collective is an program of Hot House West committed to fostering and nurturing Salt Lake City's blossoming acoustic music scene. Run entirely by volunteers who share a passion for music, we believe in the value of making acoustic music accessible to all. From bluegrass to old-time and swing, acoustic music has the power to unite people and provide opportunities for connection, learning, and joy.

If you’ve ever wanted to dust off the ol’ banjo, meet new pickers, or even just find more live acoustic music, follow us, spread the word, and join our Trash Moon Community! We hope to see you soon!

-Melissa
