Welcome to Hot House West!
Thanks for joining us for our sixth installment of the weekly newsletter. We are so excited about all the happenings here in our Utah music community! There are a lot of great places to jam or catch live music, so get out there and enjoy some great swing and acoustic roots music. We feel you can never have too many opportunities to play music though, so we are working on setting up a weekly swing jam starting in January. Stay tuned for details!
In this week's newsletter, we've got some info on an upcoming workshop and a lot of fun events to check out. Rounding out the newsletter, Alicia Wrigley makes an appearance and Nathan Royal from Hot House West nerds out on the old standard, After You've Gone. Enjoy!

COMMUNITY NEWS
WEEKLY MUSICIAN SPOTLIGHT - ALICIA WRIGLEY
If you've been around Salt Lake awhile and follow the jazz scene at all, you have definitely run into Alicia Wrigley. In addition to being a phenomenal person, she plays excellent bass, sings, leads bands, writes, arranges, and teaches, all while finding time to
be a mother!
Alicia graduated from the University of Utah a few years back with a Masters Degree in Music where she studied with Kris Johnson. She has taken that knowledge and put it to work in our local scene, where she generously shares her talent with numerous projects. Be sure to follow her to stay up to date with where she is playing next. Whether it's her jazz arrangements of Sesame Street, an Excellence in the Community concert, her power-pop cover trio (Radio Rhythm Retrograde), or our very own upcoming music video of 'When I Grow Too Old To Dream,' Alicia makes every project she touches
better.
Nerd Corner
Exploring the tune, 'After You've Gone'
We absolutely love this old standard! It's certainly a staple around Hot House West and is a great tune to know wherever you're jamming in the world. Whenever I am learning a new tune, I like to go back to the source. The earliest recording I know about is the 1918 recording from Marion Harris. It includes a verse at the beginning that is largely forgotten, but it is quite nice. Bust it out at a jam and surprise everyone!
Here is a link to the original changes. It was likely recorded in the key of F major, however, old recording techniques caused a lot of tunes to sound dramatically sharp or flat. This can be frustrating when you're trying to learn something by ear! If I'm transcribing Django for example, I'll usually tune my guitar to match the pitch. There's so much great music from this era that people gloss over because of the recording quality. If you're a nerd like me though, it's great fun to jump in and try to learn something new from something old!

Patron Saint Django - Vinyl & CDs Available!
Thank you for hanging out with Hot House West! We are an organization devoted to growing and supporting Utah’s swing and acoustic roots music community. We believe that acoustic music—from swing and jazz to bluegrass, old-time, country and western—
brings people together and creates opportunities for connectedness, learning, and joy.
Our goal is to provide and promote weekly and monthly events, from dances, to jams, concerts, and workshops, that support and build our acoustic community. If you’ve ever wanted to dust off the ol’ guitar, meet new players, find a dance partner, or even just find more live acoustic music, follow us, spread the word, and join our Hot House West community! We hope to see you soon!
