HOT HOUSE WEST - WEEKLY NEWSLETTER 1/2/2024

Updated: May 16

1/2/2024

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Thanks for joining us for our ninth installment of the weekly newsletter. This officially marks our first year as nonprofit 501(c)(3) and it has been a wild ride!Last year at this time, we had just completed our first rehearsal with the 14-piece Swing Orchestra, aiming to strengthen Utah's music community.

Through the process of creating an album with 40 credits, shooting two music videos, performing over 100 times in various combinations, and hosting several workshops and jam sessions, we've seen first-hand the uplifting power of community building through music. These experiences inspired us to start The Swing Collective and the Trash Moon Collective, two programs aimed at maximizing our connective power across the acoustic music spectrum. As we enter the new year, we want to share our updated purpose and vision.

Our Purpose

Our purpose is to create experiences of connectedness, learning, and joy through the language of acoustic music.

Our Vision

We envision Salt Lake City as a hub for world class acoustic music. We accomplish this by building a healthy community-oriented ecosystem that’s accessible for all.

Thank you all for joining us on this journey! Every interaction you take with Hot House West, whether it's attending an event, volunteering, dusting off the fiddle, sharing a

video, or even just reading this newsletter, helps us carry this vision forward.

In this week's newsletter we have some info on upcoming live performances. Pat Terry makes an appearance in our community spotlight. Learn a little about the history of Lindy Hop in our Listening Room.

Enjoy!

COMMUNITY NEWS

WEEKLY MUSICIAN SPOTLIGHT - PAT TERRY

When James and Nathan started the first iteration of Hot House West as a small quartet back in 2011, one of their early inspirations was the Red Rock Hot Club, lead by Pat Terry. They were both studying privately with Pat and were given an opportunity to sit in with the band at their weekly Gracie's night. At that time, there were way fewer players or online resources for Gypsy jazz and the chance to play with veteran players was deeply motivating.

Now as we look to the future of Hot House West and think about the impact that we want to have on our community, those experiences resonate. Opportunities to play with great players make a difference. Our vision for the Swing Collective is deeply motivated by experiences like these.

Thank you Pat for being an inspiration! Grab a lesson from Pat or go catch Red Rock Hot Club. He's a great teacher, player, and friend.

Listening Room: Music Appreciation for Non-Musicians

Lindy Hop feat. Frankie Manning

If you haven't dug into the history of Lindy Hop, then you're missing a key part of swing music's history! Check out this iconic performance of Whitey's Lindy Hoppers (featuring the legendary Frankie Manning) performing in the 1941 film Hellzapoppin'. This group was formed in the very Savoy Ballroom where Duke Ellington and his band got their start. The energy is electric, and if you catch the spark, join our friends at Salt City Swing to learn some moves yourself. They'll be offering some beginner instruction at our Swing Renaissance II show on 1/25. Come dance!

Maybe we can repeat history?

Patron Saint Django - Vinyl & CDs Available!

Thank you for hanging out with Hot House West! We are an organization devoted to growing and supporting Utah’s swing and acoustic roots music community. We believe that acoustic music—from swing and jazz to bluegrass, old-time, country and western— brings people together and creates opportunities for connectedness, learning, and joy.

Our goal is to provide and promote weekly and monthly events, from dances, to jams, concerts, and workshops, that support and build our acoustic community. If you’ve ever wanted to dust off the ol’ guitar, meet new players, find a dance partner, or even just find more live acoustic music, follow us, spread the word, and join our Hot House West community! We hope to see you soon!
