HERSCHEL BULLEN

Herschel Bullen is a self-taught saxophone player, adding flute to his repertoire
later in life. He has played professionally since Middle School (high school and
Ward dances, etc). Going on into college and Law School, he worked in orchestras
for travelling shows and artists, e.g., Holiday On Ice, Ice Capades, Disney On
Parade, Ringling Bros. Circus, etc., Natalie Cole, Johnny Mathis, and others. Mr.
Bullen helped put himself through law school playing the elite country clubs (for
what he characterizes as “business man’s bounce”), the now defunct University
Club, Ambassador Club, and Fort Douglas Club, and the still extant Salt Lake
Country Club, as well as the Elk’s Club and many less swanky venues. At the
close of his last year of law school, he went on the road with one of the last great
big bands, the Woody Herman Thundering Herd. That included a month at
Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas backing Tony Bennett, after which going back on the
road with other singers, such as Dionne Warwick. But eventually Mr. Bullen
came home to practice law. Nevertheless, he has always remained active in the
music community, performing with his own groups and with a number of
ensembles, including The Utah Symphony, The Salt Lake City Jazz Orchestra,
and at the Salt Lake City and Telluride Jazz Festivals.
