GEORGIE PETROV
Georgi was born in 1987 in Yambol Bulgaria and started playing guitar after watching Steve Morse perform live in Bulgaria with Deep Purple. His first 12 years on the instrument were strongly informed by a rigorous classical training with the culmination of a BA in music and economics and a MA in jazz performance from Lawrence University and University of New Orleans.
In 2011 Georgi moved to New Orleans, an experience which has shaped and altered his personal and professional life in many surprising ways. Musically, New Orleans has been a blessing, especially its community of musicians and courageous sympathetic creators. Among those are: Loose Willis , Taylor Smith and the Roamin’ Jasmine, Aurora Nealand, James Evans, Meryl Zimmerman, Charles Brewer Trio, Panorama Jazz Band
Georgi has collaborated and recorded with numerous artists over the years and has released a solo album and co-led an album with trombonist Russell Ramirez. For more info on different projects and recordings click here.
Georgi continues to honor and explore his own Bulgarian heritage which in recent times culminated in an album with a fellow musician and friend the accordionist Matthew Schreiber. The album entitled Zodiac can be found here.
In addition, Georgi recently finished a project based on the book “Physics of Sorrow” by the Bulgarian writer Georgi Gospodinov. For more info and video follow the link.
In the summer of 2018 Georgi joined forces with drummer Benedict Hesse, organist Gero Koerner and trombonist Pia Miranda from Cologne, Germany. An album is to be released some time in 2019. A live performance of the band is available for streaming here.
Georgi is still an active participant in the New Orleans music scene and tours around the world and the US fairly frequently.
